I Earned This Much: My First Day with Medium Partner Program

On January 1st, I applied for the Medium Partner Program (MPP), and surprisingly, it got approved right away, and I have already made money! Yes! On Day 1!

To provide you with some background,
I am Ellen, an experienced Data Scientist and Augmented Reality Consultant with half a decade of expertise. I am also an avid traveler and paraglider, qualities that make me adaptable and quick to resonate with diverse environments. Currently, I am teaching at the most fun data science bootcamp — Le Wagon 👾🤖🚌.
Recently, I launched my AR course with META through Facebook Blueprint earlier this year — teaching Meta Spark Studio. My AR work with Filterqu has helped brands reach 9 billion impressions and generated 4 million user-generated content.
Before I reveal those exciting $$ digits, let me tell you about my Medium Journey. I started writing again recently on December 27, 2023, after logging in to my Medium and seeing how many people read my first article published in August 2023. Yes, I only have 1 article published before December. Here is the stats.
That article was viewed 1600 times, read by 1000 people, and received 6 claps. Well, what’s the big deal? Is it the number that gave me the thrill? I would say it’s not the main cause.
Despite this being my first time writing on Medium, I have been engaged in content creation for a while — through the Augmented Reality Experience I share on Social Media.
Last month, I published an AR Effect on TikTok (TikTok filters), and the effect has garnered 61 million views since then. I will talk more about it in an upcoming article.
The point is, this number is not something that makes me jump and want to post an article about it. Instead, it was the interaction I received. Recently, I allowed push notifications on my iPad, and almost every day, I saw how people added my article to their reading list, despite it receiving only 6 claps. Imagine having people come to a bookshelf with a collection of your writings, and they just come and want to store your article/brochure in their clipping magazine.
Additionally, I received a notification — a private note suggesting that I should submit my first article to the Python in Plain English Publication. As a result, I submitted my next three articles there. Furthermore, I recently submitted an article to Towards Data Science on January 1, 2024, and started applying for the Medium Partner Program out of curiosity. Publishing articles in Medium Publications does help new writers reach broader audiences.
What is the Medium Partner Program?
The Medium Partner Program is a program offered by Medium that allows writers to be compensated for their work based on the engagement of the article. As a writer, you can choose whether you want to monetize your article or not. If you choose to monetize or paywall your article, readers must be Medium members to access it.

I earned $16.62 in 1 day from 3 articles.
Medium only monetized my content after I signed up for the Medium Partner Program and set a paywall for articles I wanted to monetize. Looking at the stats below, I received 10.2K views and 5.3 reads. However, the MPP only monetized 5.8K views in January. So, if I had applied for this program sooner, I might have been able to receive double the incentive I got now. The monetary value is not substantial, but I was surprised that I could reach this many people.

I also posted one LinkedIn post regarding my Medium article, and surprisingly, in one day, it picked up 21.8K impressions. I have another LinkedIn post, and after 90 days, it only reached 8.5K impressions. The power of amplification is amazing!
This might be a factor of luck for a new writer, or perhaps my topic is interesting enough to stop readers from scrolling. Nevertheless, I am still amazed by the results it brings. If we look at the monetary value, it’s considered small — enough to buy me a coffee and break even from the $5 Medium subscription. However, the value it brings me is a connection with people; 10,000 individuals were enlightened by my article. Just wow!

We often underestimate the numbers we see on screen, but if you envision them in real life, even hearing just one clap in person can bring joy. I recall the early days of Facebook when my mom was thrilled with five thumbs up. While numbers may not be the primary focus, they do provide insight into how your work can impact those around you.
